My mixed media sculptures entitled, The Space Between Us 1, 2, and 3 are made of terracotta, chicken wire, rope, woven palm fronds, darned thread, avocado seeds, and vegetable dye sealed with lacquer. My sculptures’ organic shapes behave as symbolic marriages, with the foreground and background having been suspended from the ceiling.
The inspiration for this came to me while walking down a tree lined path to USQ Springfield. The sun was shining through the leaves, making the background more prominent than the solid form of the leaves. Barbara Hepworth explored this notion with her multi-pieced forms, exploring ‘space contained within form’. I envisage The Space Between Us series being exhibited both in a gallery setting and outdoors, and I’m interested to see how the elements change and impact the woven fibers, adding to the narrative of the work.
